Shades of Twilight Linda Howard 9780671019716 Books

I've read this book a few times before. I live Linda Howard, she is in my top 3 favorite writers. This book is gritty. There is incest, which grosses me out, but it still is a favorite read because I so love the hero and heroine in the story. Previously, I've read this book in paperback form, but I splurged and bought the kindle edition. Oh man! The typos are bad. There are some weird mis-types for punctuation, some odd grammar mistakes, but the WORST is that the typist mistakenly types "Luanda" mistakenly for the name "Lucinda" which is the grandmother in the story. It is done multiple times...and so irritating. :( The story is a 4 star , but the editing sucks and irritates...I give the editing a 2 star and balance it out to three stars total. Linda Howard is still da bomb, but someone needs to replace that editor and fix this kindle edition!

Shades of Twilight Linda Howard 9780671019716 Books Reviews

I don't know who is responsible for creating an e-book but they really need to work on their editing. Lucinda was frequently called Luanda. Quotation marks were often replaced by odd symbols. Many times contractions were used incorrectly (it'll a pretty sky instead of it's a pretty sky)

Sadly these mistakes disrupt the enjoyment of the book. I often had to reread a paragraph to understand what it really meant.

This isn't the fault of the author. It's the fault of whoever creates the e-book
Shades of Twilight is the most unusual book that I
have read in many years. It deals with incest by
mutual consent. I thought that was more disturbing
than the fact that distant cousins were in love.
There is a murder and a secret that went untold for
ten years.

First cousins Roanna and Jessie were seven and
thirteen, respectively, when Roanna's parents
were killed in a car accident along with Jessie's
mother. Lucinda lost both her children and
daughter-in-law.

Davenport is the wealthiest family in Tuscumbia,
Alabama. Lucinda is the heir of Davencourt.
Lucinda Davenport is a manipulative person, whom
over the years had done her best to control her
family. When Jessie's mother died in the car accident.
Her grandmother Lucinda planned Jessie's future the
night of the car accident. She wanted Webb Tallant,
her great nephew, to married Jessie. Webb will be the
next heir to Davencourt. He agreed to married Jessie
when they were old enough to marry.

There was a loud scream that woke everyone in the
household. It was Roanne who found Jessie's body
lying on the floor. Someone had hit her head in with
a fireplace iron. Webb was the prime suspect, then was
cleared. He had an alibi.

Several weeks later, Webb got up one morning packed
his clothes and left Davencourt. Ten years later,
Lucinda hired a private investigator to locate Webb.
Lucinda told Roanna to bring Webb back home. Roanna
was able to persuade Webb that Lucinda needed him.
It didn't take much encouragement on her part. Webb
was secretly in love with Roanna. For ten years, it
haunted him who killed Jessie.

The last chapter revealed the murderer who killed
Jessie. I was very surprised. After Jessie was
murdered, I tried unsuccessfully to figure it out.
Linda Howard didn't let on until the last chapter.

Shades of Twilight is a classic mystery novel. There
were other characters that were intriguing as well.
Lucinda's relatives were living in the Davencourt estate
and were nothing but freeloaders.

I recommend Shades of Twilight.
Being a fan of Ms. Howard's for nearly two decades, I wasn't as impressed with this one than usual. It's a personal hang up on "withholding information" driven plots that I disliked the most. Ended up shaking a few times telling them "just talk!"
The ending was an incredible shocking surprise and while I can usually see things miles away, I had to take a moment for the "wow.....!" factor.
I loved the characters, as always Linda Howard has the best, though if they just sat down and had certain conversations years and years ago things would have gone smoothly. Yet, we wouldn't have had a book to read! (Well, perhaps we would but without all the tension stuff in between.)
Not one of my favorites, but still a decent story that breaks the mold and there's nothing wrong with that at all.
I love Linda Howard, and she doesn't disappoint with this book. Yes, there is an issue that some readers may be uncomfortable with (incest between secondary characters), but hey, it's fiction and it's an engaging, suspenseful story (and the incest is not the main focus of the book). The development of the main characters, Webb and Roanna, is very nicely done, though I do think the buildup to their actually becoming involved in a relationship was somewhat excessive. They kind of danced around each other for a bit longer than was really necessary (and could have actually talked to each other much sooner than they did to clear the air), but all in all, it was a great read.
I love Ms. Howard but this early book is not one of the best for modern-day readers, at least as far as I'm concerned. The heroine was just namby-pamby until nearly halfway through the book, and although she acknowledges that she is very self-confident, she doesn't really act like it. She's run the family businesses for 10 years with her grandmother, for heaven's sake but is prepared to let the "hero" just have it without an argument. I put "hero" in quotes because any man who would take a woman's virginity and then make love to her 3 more times in the same night is not a hero to me. Let's be real, folks! There were too many misunderstandings in this story. For example, the heroine spontaneously kisses the "hero" and he kisses her back, then pushes her away and says, "No! Gdamn I won't do this!" Then he wonders, after she has sadly mounted her horse and ridden away, whether he's hurt her feelings. Duh. Just not a winner to me and certainly not worth $7.99!!!
