Five Night Stand A Novel Richard J Alley Books
I cried at the end of this book. Before, I read the Coda tears pooled in my eyes. I cried for the loves lost, the loves found and the loves remembered. This is one of the best books I have read. When I read I want a book to take you to a whole new place and to feel like you are there. I was in the jazz club every night. I could hear the music. I was walking side by side with Oliver in New Orleans, Memphis, Harlem, and New York. I could imagine being in the bedrooms, in the house, the diner, the bookstore. This book touched me and makes me a little sad I waited years to read it but I think I appreciate it more since I waited so long. It seems most got their happy ending. Everyone learned to live life with passion and love and that is the true lesson. I hear the music now coming from the instruments and I close my eyes as I sway to the beat of the rhythm.Tags : Amazon.com: Five Night Stand: A Novel (9781477827741): Richard J. Five Night Stand A Novel Richard J Alley Books Reviews
An extraordinary novel. One of the best I have read in a long time, and it is now on my favorites list. Beautiful lyrical writing, spare yet rich. Characters I felt close to, and a story I read slowly and savored. I hope Mr. Alley writes more novels - I am eager to read more of his excellent writing. Thank you for a wonderful book. Highly recommended.
I chose this book for my book club based on a recommendation . In the three years my club has been meeting, there have only been three book that everyone unamiously agreed on. This was one of those books. That's quite a recommendation because these ladies are well read and have high expectations. Everyone thought it was very well written and the characters were recognizable and relatable. We all wanted to be in that Jazz Club for those last five days. Even those that did not relate to the music loved it because they were able to relate to the individuals. We all felt there should be a sequel. We'd like to here more about the bartender/tatoo artist. ..... That's a story in the making!
This novel explores the nuances of the human heart and behavior. Utilizing the theme of music, the author deftly illustrates the inconsistencies that make us different from one another and, yet, serve to bring us together. I highly recommend this superbly written novel. The pages flew by and when I finished the book, I found myself wishing it would go on.
I am a music person, so I was curious to read this book. It didn't disappoint even though I didn't know the author. It was a good insight on how musicians love their talents and work, but the story told how it takes a toll on family life and loneliness. The main male character in this story, was away from his family many months at a time performing but with little pay, so unfortunately both he and his wife had affairs to have a fulfilling life. The children paid for this also.
On a positive note, I loved the story and history of Jazz, and how music can be all consuming and become the biggest part of your life. The story took place in New York, New Orleans and Tennessee, making Jazz part of the history of these locations. A good read if you are into the history of music.
As someone who has a personal interest in and love of music, I was delighted with this extremely well-written book that enveloped the love of jazz and intertwined that love with the lives of three people who had never met before the final five performances of a legendary jazz piano player in New York City. All three also shared a background with the cities so often known for jazz New Orleans, Memphis, and New York City. I was fascinated at how those three lives came together and was also pleased with the portrayal of that music genre itself. I really loved this book!
Every year I reread certain books for the integrity of the stories and the authors’ voices. Richard Alley’s Five Night Stand will join that group. I love this book.
For five nights, in the basement bar of the Capasso Hotel in New York City, Jazz great Oliver Pleasant and the rest of Alley’s characters face the risk of falling in or out of love, healing the past, the uncertainty of a career crisis, and for the youngest and oldest of the group, the eventuality of their passing.
Alley’s smoothly rolling prose, his spot-on ear for dialogue, deft handling of point of view, and general storytelling chops give his characters the authenticity to tell their stories with honesty and grace.
As the journalist/novelist character, Frank Severs, ruminates “More than anything though, he loves a good story and an interesting character, and his experience and novelist heart tell him when he finds them.”
Looks like you found them, Mr. Alley. Congratulations.
I loved this book, and I'm not a jazz fan! In fact, I'm so tone deaf that I don't "get" music unless it has lyrics. Still, I found the explanations of the importance of jazz to the characters interesting. More importantly, I found the characters perfectly developed and quite real. I was so engrossed in their lives that I had trouble reading one chapter because it was blurred by my tears. But they were happy tears. I also enjoyed the settings, especially since I have lived in New Orleans and just visited Memphis. I consider Five Night Stand to be the best e-book I've read. It's very disappointing that Alley hasn't published another book. Hopefully he will soon.
